Eighth Hill

The site selected in Rome has changed a lot since the Nolli Plan. With the Fascist regime of Mussolini most of the site was destroyed. Today, the site is a touristic attraction with Teatro Marcello on one side, Capitoline Hill and Vittorio Emmanuela on the other side. The flow of tourist and tourist buses makes it almost impossible to cross and circulate on that area. The firs problem we addressed was the traffic control.

  1. Traffic Control
  • Transforming the roundabout
  • Separating pedestrians and cars with addition of platform. With different speed, comes different levels.
  • Addition of bus stop with direct access to building
  • Trimming the buildings corner keeping the landmark of the theater.

2.   Private courtyards opened to public creating party walls.

  • Direct street access to courtyard creating a new condition.
  • Activation of the courtyards becoming public
  • Connection with Public building
  • Creation of new condition with a green wall

3.  The Eighth Hill

  • Addition of a Hill to Rome’s 7 hills that shape the city. Connecting Capitoline Hill to the courtyard.
  • Access to a new higher viewpoint while being documented.
  • Activation of the building to the city through the amphitheater. Windows open and there is a direct communication between the historical city and the new building.
  • Imitating the Capitoline Hill with a reverse Hill creating a new viewpoint from below for the cars.

4.  Program

  • Amphitheater with direct view to Teatro Marcello. Connecting the old city to the new hill.
  • Siesta à Capsule Hotels- View to the inside indentation
  • Bar and Shops open at all time.
  • WIFI free zone. Technology shapes everyday life.
  • View Points – Including Reverse view for cars.
